Bavarian road trip - part 2

So after crashing at Dave's in Munich again, we set out in the morning headed to the Northern part of the Romantischestrasse, or Romantic Road. Our plan was basically to head North along the Romantic Road and see what we could see until we got to Nuremburg. From there we would head to Dresden and drop the car off.

It was still super cold and snowy, pretty exciting and foreign for us.

It's hard to remember exactly where all these photos were taken, but the first town we came to was Augsburg, we didnt stay long though as it was quite a big town and we were on the hunt for much smaller villages.

We drove through Nordlingen and Dinkelsbuhl on the way to Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber.
Here is a link to the Romantic Road map.

I think these ones are Dinkelsbuhl which is another medieval, walled town along this stretch.

Dinkelsbuhl

Deer running across the field, they ran full pelt one direction for about 300m, then pacicked, turned and went back the other way just as fast.

The scenery along the way was magic, most of the photos that you see of this part of the world are in the summer time, but there was something really cool about driving through snow in the winter.

Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber was where we ended up staying for the night. The Altstadt (old town) of Rothenburg Germany is a patchwork of winding cobbled lanes lined with picturesque half timbered houses. Massive towers like Röderturm and the intact city walls form a ring around Rothenburg and you can walk along the top of it to get views over the city and the Tauber valley.

There were heaps of christmas shops with hand made ornaments and bits and pieces. Apparently, these are here all year round as Rothenburg is known as the town of eternal christmas. Rothenburg is also famous for Schneeballen, a local desert that looks spectacular, but is a bit disappointing when you actually get into one.

Schneeballen is, of course, snowball in English. They look so awesome! But are just kind of dry and bland inside, Dave warned us of this, but I still tried more than one, sure that eventually I would get a good one.

This was the view from our room down the street.

Goldene Rose was a little creepy, but cosy. In this hotel Ange and I decided we would go vegetarian. After thinking about it for quite a while we visited a really good vego organic shop and it was the final push over the line.

Rothenburg main square by night.

A great stein shop that we found.

Great leg of the trip!! Again, credit goes to Ange for pushing to get the car, was so worth it. Such amazing scenery, and the small towns are so German and still have a real medieval feel to them, it was fantastic.

We hopped back in the car early in the morning and started out for Nuremburg...
